                The Squeaky Squirrel

A newsletter about and for our Mountain Community
by Miss Dee, published author (a.k.a. Dee Lee)

                                                                                                              Happy Holidays!

                                                                                                                     December 15, 2004

If You Missed…

…the Thanksgiving Dinner/Annual Membership Meeting, you missed saying "good-bye and thank you" to our former President, Mitch Tanenbaum, and former Secretary, Tamie Martin.  You also missed saying "hello" to and meeting our new President, Dave Pettus, and our new Secretary, me, Dee Lee (a.k.a. Miss Dee)

You also missed hearing a few nice compliments: "The flower beds are beautiful," and, "The grounds around the Schoolhouse look very nice;" both statements shared during the review of the Treasurer's Report. You also missed the suggestion of adding one event to our calendar:  a plant and seed swap.

And you also missed the one comment about the announcement board on the corner of Deer Creek Canyon Road and Deer Creek Canyon, across from Phillipsburg.  Yes we are having a bit of trouble with the readability of the posters.  Here's why:  the original piece of plexiglass was broken.  A substitute piece, several inches narrower than the original piece, has been used in its place this year; that's less writing space. We apologize for any squinting or eye strain you may have suffered.  The Board of Directors will rectify the announcement board situation before the 2005 events start.  By the way, when you were reading the posters, did you notice the new www.sampsonclub.org sign, just above the poster area?

Meet the Officers

President, Dave Pettus (303) 697-8780 12183 Arnett Ranch Road dpettus@yahoo.com

Dave moved to the Sampson area four years ago with his wife, Barbara, and daughter, Sammi, and their Alpacas.  Their family has grown: horses, dogs, and rabbits, all providing sufficient distraction and lifestyle.

Dave has traveled a bit, being raised in the Virginia countryside, and meeting Barbara in Adelaide, Australia.  They're both Yanks.  Barbara is from New Mexico but Sammi (Samantha) is an "Aussie" by birth. Sammi has two half brothers, Jake and Tom, who live in Adelaide.

Dave now works for Jefferson County as a geek.  In addition to his fondness for animals, he also referees basketball at local schools.

His objective for the coming year in the Sampson Community Club is to, "'keep the faith' and ensure that Dee and Virginia get the credit they so richly deserve."

Treasurer, Virginia Temmer (303) 697-7272 11032 Mill Hollow Road vtemmer@earthlink.net

Virginia was born in Denver, and lived in the Denver area until 1996, when she moved to the foothills with her two children, Kevin (1990) and Michelle (1994).  She also has three cats, and one dog.  She is an auditor for the U.S. Government (MMS, not IRS).

An avid skier, Virginia volunteered for 15 years with the Sports Center for the Disabled.  Retired from that program, she holds a lifetime ski pass at Winter Park.  She spends many winter weekends at Winter Park, playing there with friends and family.

Virginia became involved with the Sampson Community Club through Susan Conwell, who is the Mountain Mama Breakfast founder.  Virginia has spent time working on the buildings, coordinating volunteers, and doing other jobs as needed.

Her goals include improvements to the Sampson School, and eventual restoration of Lamb School.  She normally coordinates the calendar for rentals, and has been an officer of the Sampson Community Club for approximately five years.

     Secretary, Dee Lee (a.k.a. Miss Dee) (303) 697-2558 15600 Sampson Road missdee001@earthlink.net

Dee is an accomplished metaphysical and astrological writer of 25+ years.  She has had four books, one seven-booklet collection, and over 100 articles published during this time frame.  A Colorado native, Dee moved to Sampson Road in 2001 with her husband, Mike.

In February, 2003, she offered to write the Squeaky Squirrel.  "And it has been completed, on time, ever since!"  In June of this same year, Dee became a regular "delivery assistant," hand delivering the Squeaky Squirrel with Virginia Temmer.  In September of 2003, the Club's website was rebuilt by Mike Lee, the Club's webmaster, and together, Dee and Mike next redesigned it.  Mike maintains this site while Dee writes the script and photographs the majority of the events.  The photos are then placed on the website, www.sampsonclub.org, "and it truly is a labor of love!"

In March of 2004, Dee began to "fill in" at the Club's events:  writing the poster board announcements, shopping for supplies, and helping with the set up and clean up for the majority of the events.  "Just so folks know, Mike has been putting up the poster board announcements because I can't maneuver the wooden handle set up."

In August of 2004, Dee created, with Mike and Virginia's help, the 12 flowerbeds at the edge of the Sampson Schoolhouse Parking Lot.  She and Mike also revamped the original Iris bed by the Schoolhouse steps.  During the "Roll-Off Spruce-Up" event, Mike tilled two additional flowerbeds while Virginia and Dee filled five Whiskey Barrels with soil.  "Between 15 flowerbeds and five barrels, I planted over 200 spring bulbs and over 70 Iris, some of the Iris we transplanted from my gardens."

Her objective for the coming year in the Sampson Community Club is to, "create one or two new, enjoyable events, and use my talents for the Club's evolvement.  And along those lines, I would like to add a quote that I saw somewhere, and by whom I don't know:  'If we're doing a good job, please tell everyone you know. If we're not, please tell us.'"

     Vice President

The office of Vice President remains open.  If you are interested in helping the Board of Directors coordinate events, set up for and tidy up after events, assist with property maintenance or projects (Virginia's Wish List) or feel you can make a positive difference by being the Vice President, please give one of the Board members a call.

If You Missed…

…the Roll-Off Spuce-Up, you missed the opportunity to dismantle junk and toss stuff into the 30-Yard Roll-off, help clean up the Sampson Schoolhouse grounds, plant flower bulbs, fill Whiskey Barrel planters with soil and flower bulbs, enjoy the company of good neighbors, and eat delicious homemade chili!

…the Haunted Cabin & Halloween Potluck Party, you missed eating a lot of delicious food, watching pumpkins being carved, visiting with your neighbors, and getting your wits scared out of you by some very creative and talented youngsters!

…the Craft Fair, you missed beautiful jewelry and gift baskets, aromatic fire starters, fragrant teas, body oils, and soaps, peanut butter birdfeeders, alpaca apparel, and visiting with all the crafters!

* * * All events, except the Pig Roast, are hosted at the Sampson Schoolhouse.  The Sampson Community Club's Directors and coordinators are always appreciative of those volunteers who help set up tables, roll silverware, sweep the floor, take out the trash or wipe off the table clothes after an event.  If you have a few extra moments and would like to help "smooth out the rough spots," please call the coordinator of the event you can help with.  Thank you, very much! * * *

Editor's Notes

The Squeaky Squirrel, a quarterly newsletter, is published on the 15th of March, June, September, and December.  Deadlines for ads and submissions are the 1st of these same months.

Time to hang up                the Birdfeeders!

Newsletter Mailing

As we wrote in the September, 2004 newsletter, "…some of the event flyers will not be mailed."  We urge you to mark your calendar with the Club's events, include your address on our "e-mail blast" list (contact Mitch Tanenbaum at MTanenba@prolynx.com) and regularly visit our website, www.sampsonclub.org, for updates to the Club's events.

Kidz Korner by "Freckles"

Our talented young author shares with us "a kid's view" of the holiday season.

The holiday season is not about giving and receiving (although we kids sometimes would like to be.)  It's about peace and family and yummy stuff.

- 6 -

I could go on and on, but now, um, let's talk about siblings.  Siblings are associated with holidays:  when you're little you may want to be an only child because then you'd get more presents, but when you open your presents you want to play with them.  And who do you play with when you're not fighting, arguing pinching, punching, tugging, bragging, tricking, etc.?  The answer for me is my sibling.

     See ya' in a bit!

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy Kwanza, and Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eagle Scout Projects

At the November, 2004 Thanksgiving Dinner/Annual Membership Meeting, our then President, Mitch Tanenbaum, reminded all of us that Eagle Scout projects are always welcome at the Sampson Community Club.  If you are an Eagle Scout or know one who has a special project or if you or someone else needs to perform Community Service, the Sampson Community Club will gladly help you get your project started and/or accept your help!  Call Virginia Temmer, (303) 697-7272.

The Greenhouse Corner

I hope you've marked your calendar for the Sampson Community Club's "Plant & Seed Swap" on Saturday, April 23rd, 10:00 a.m. to noon.  We'll simply get together at the Sampson Schoolhouse and swap any plants (indoor or out) cuttings, and/or seeds, gardening books, and gardening ideas or suggestions while we sip our coffee or tea and eat some treats!  I'm looking forward visiting with you.

And now, if your kitchen Herb Garden is flourishing (and even if it's not) here are two recipes that make especially appreciated additions to holiday or everyday meals.

               Herbed Butter Spread                                                   Herb Salad
(A great spread for breads and hamburgers)                1/2 cup each parsley, basil,
                                                                                        chives, and mint leaves
1 pound butter                                                            1 cup sliced green olives
1 tablespoon each thyme, rosemary, chives,                 1 cup Fetta cheese
sage, parsley, oregano, and basil                                  1/2 cup diced onions
                                                                                        1 head of lettuce
Chop the herbs together well, mix in                             Olive Oil and lemon juice                                      with the butter.                                                             Salt
Spread on bread and warm in the oven.
The left over spread may be wrapped and kept            Chop the herbs, tear the lettuce, and
in the freezer for one month.                                         toss the ingredients together.  In a separate bowl,                                                                                         combine the oil, juice, and salt, mix well.  Spoon                                                                                         the dressing over the salad.
