Roll-Off
Spuce-Up
& Barbecue October 2nd 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In late August, thirteen beautiful flowerbeds were designed for our parking lot. Bulbs were purchased and donated, borders and labor were donated, and the flowerbeds were planted on August 28th. These gorgeous beds will be a source of pleasure for all of us for years to come. We are delighted to announce that two additional flowerbeds have been designed and plans are in the making. In conjunction with the Parking Lot Spruce-Up, part 1, the Club will purchase four or five "Whiskey Barrels" and fill them with flowers as well as purchase one park bench. So if you missed August's deadline for donating some of your thinned out bulbs, bring them to the October 2nd Roll-Off Spruce-Up so they may be included in the flowerbeds. Now for part two of the Parking Lot Spruce-Up: unsightly debris removal. We need some volunteers to bring shovels, chainsaws, weed-eaters, pliers, hammers, etc. to help dismantle and move the unsightly debris by the Schoolhouse into the Roll-Off dumpster which the Sampson Community Club is renting. This Roll-Off dumpster is also for your convenience: to save you making a trip to the dump! But adding to it will be on a "first come, first serve" basis. Bring your discards of carpeting, scrap wood, etc. (please do not put anything toxic into the Roll-Off) and add them to the Roll-Off dumpster on October 3rd, between 9 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. for a nominal per cubic foot charge. When the Roll-Off is full, it's full, but if there is enough interest in renting a Roll-Off again, we will take names. A barbecue will follow the October 2nd clean up. Coordinator: Virginia Temmer (303) 697-7272. - 2 - Newsletter Mailing As many of you know, the Sampson Community Club has not been able to deliver the Squeaky Squirrel or any event flyers as we have in the past: in your mailbox. In order to comply with postal regulations, we are now mailing our newsletter. Because some of the event flyers will not be mailed, we urge you to mark your calendar with the convenient "post-it" information included in this issue as well as include your address on our "e-mail blast" list (contact Mitch Tanenbaum at mtanen@prolynx.com with your e-mail address) and regularly visit our website www.sampsonclub.org for changes or updates to the Club's events. Our site is updated monthly however event changes or updates are posted on the site's Home page as quickly as we receive them. If You Missed… …the Pig Roast, you missed a great opportunity to visit with your neighbors, indulge your palette with roasted pig, a wonderful assortment of mouth-watering salads, breads, and delicious desserts, and the jovial "Martini Bar." …the Canyon Clean-Up, you missed the chance to help tidy up the canyon roads and chitchat with some of your neighbors. Membership Directory Due to security concerns, the Membership Directory will not be posted on the website. Just a reminder… Need a place to host an event? I spoke with my neighbor and he said, "I like to scare the heck out of people!" I like to get heaps of candy! I also like to help with a haunted house! My dream Thanksgiving is eating pizza with all my friends, without the adults! Please Call At the 2003 Ice Cream Social, one community member discussed installing a security system in the schoolhouse. The board did not follow up. Could that person please call Virginia at (303) 697- 7272? 2004 Sampson Community Club Calendar Please cut out the information below and tape it to your calendar!!! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - October 2nd October 29th October 30th Roll-Off Spruce-Up Haunted House Potluck Dinner Coordinator: 7:00 p.m.- 10:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. Virginia Temmer Coordinator: Haunted House (303) 697-7272 Virginia Temmer 7:00 p.m.- 10:00 p.m. vtemmer@earthlink.net (303) 697-7272 Coordinator: Virginia Temmer (303) 697-7272 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - October 3rd * The Mystery Dinner on September 25th Community Roll-Off has been canceled. Well here we are once again, at the sad end of the gardening season. Before the snow starts to fly (brrr) there are a few more things to do outside. #1 Clean the gardening tools. Add a cup of cooking oil to a bucket of sand and stick your tools into the bucket. This mixture will remove dirt and mud and give your tools a covering of oil. The oil helps keep rust away. #2 Till the garden under in late October. While tilling, give it a good feeding of coffee grounds, dead leaves, eggshells, and lettuce, radish, and spinach leaves. Tilling helps move up top any viruses and insect eggs. The sun and cold weather will kill both. After tilling, mark your rows and cover your garden with a thick layer of hay which helps keep the spring weeds away. Come late March or early April, simply move the hay aside and plant your cold weather veggies! #3 Collar your roses. I use the container our roses originally came in. Slit one side of the container from top to bottom, remove the bottom then set it around your bush. Fill the container with hay, heavy on the bottom, and fill it to the top. This protects the roots and the base of the rose bush. And just a note: climbing roses are much hardier and will withstand our higher altitude, colder weather, and the deeper snow we receive better than hybrid rose bushes. #4 Wrap the trunk of your fruit trees with Tree Wrap which is available at garden nurseries. Wrap the trunk up to the first branch. Tree Wrap helps protect the tree against wind and cold. #5 Plant your Spring bulbs. After you dig the hole, dust the bulbs with Baby Powder. Squirrels, chipmunks, and other critters don't like the taste of Baby Powder which insures that they will not dig up your bulbs. Place some Bone Meal or Miracle Grow in the hole, plant your bulb, and cover with soil. The rule of thumb for planting a bulb: it should be planted 3 times the depth of the height of the bulb. Or if the bulb is 1" long, the hole should be 3" deep. #6 Sketch out next year's garden while ideas are still fresh on your mind and make any notes you think necessary. You can finalize your plan in February or March. I clip my sketch to the February page of next year's calendar. #7 Hate to throw it away? Take that last little bit of the garden harvest (you know, that small squash, the handful of beans, the three tomatoes, and that one hot pepper) and make homemade soup, stew or chutney. If you have an abundance of carrots, try Cold Carrot Soup. It's really delicious! Puree the carrots in a blender. 16 ounces of carrots makes one 8-ounce bowl of soup. Pour the carrot juice in a bowl, swirl in 2 tablespoons of whipping cream, and top with a sprinkling of nutmeg and either fresh thyme or fresh ground pepper. - 7 - Ad Niche If anyone needs to perform Community Service, the Sampson Community Club will gladly accept your help!
