Canyon Corpses and Haunted House survivors are welcome to join us in the

Halloween Pot Luck Party. Bring your favorite frightening food

and we'll supply the fun and games.

And don't forget, the Haunted House will still be open!

Costumes are recommended but not required

Hey Kids, bring your carved pumpkins for our Jack-o'-lantern contest

Volunteer information: We have events, both Friday & Saturday nights and we really need your help. Call Karen George @ 303-697-3283, she will direct you to our Party Coordinator. Thank you for your support!

Just a note. The Founder of the Haunted House, Claudia Bess, started this entertaining tradition 14 or 15 years ago. She would lock up the top floor of the Sampson Schoolhouse to keep the exhibit untouched. For the past 4 years, Karen George has coordinated, delighted and surprised our Club with more and more elaborate frights. Her first year, she made hands and feet for the hauntings out of clay, which James Cukr would then paint in all fashions and colors of scariness.

Dumpster Finalization, Copy of Original Letter

                                                                                                                       09-01-2003

Dear Neighbors,

An ongoing source of conflict between various community members has been resolved after several years of ongoing disputes and discussions.

The Sampson Community Club board has signed a lease with the Sampson Road Association for space to place dumpsters near their mailboxes. The lease provides income to the Community Club and requires the Road Association to make visual improvements to the area.

We hope this brings the end of a chapter where neighbors were pitted against neighbors, and no positive outcome seemed possible.

Neither party got everything that it wanted, but it strikes a balance between the desires and needs of the Community Club and the Road Association memberships.

Phillipsburg

Vanessa Bernacchi, new owner and Mayor of Phillipsburg, is storing those precious old, (original) tables, chairs and other things before the snow starts to fly. The store's Opening date has not been set.

22nd Annual Pig Roast

What a wonderful time we had and what a delicious way to have it! There was beans and baked beans, chips and salsa, rice/broccoli salad, potato salad, cole slaw, cheese muffins, bread, chocolate cake, cherry cheesecake, lemon bars and fruit, fruit and more fruit all covering the tables graced with red tablecloths. And at the end of the tables, the star of the show, the most delicious, juicy, tender roasted pig. Mmmm, what a meal!

For those of you who don't know the history of the Annual Pig Roast, it was started in 1981 or '82. Its Founder, Glick Bishop, was already skilled in the art of roasting. He had been roasting pigs for the Martin crew for several years in his "homemade roaster" made from an old Pressure Tank. It used Charcol as the heat source.

In '81 or '82, Glick's daughter, Bryn Shepeck, suggested they have a Pig Roast for the community at the Lamb School, to make use of the property and to share the beauty atop High Grade and Kuehster Roads.

Each year, Glick Bishop and his brother Reid, along with either or both of the other Pig Cookers, Will Hanson and Bob Ahrendts, pull the Roaster, now Propane due to Fire Restrictions, and a trailer to this beautiful site and slowly roast the pig over night. At the first Roast, Jack Stodder, then an owner of a restaurant in Aurora, volunteered his carving talents. He has been carving the pig each year and truly, "enjoys it!"

This year, Glick, Bill Debets and Will Hanson brought up Weed Whackers and other equipment on Wednesday evening and cleared away the 1 to 1˝' tall grass from the Roast's traditional site. (We understand they also set back up "Le Twalet").

Since its beginning, the Annual Pig Roast has grown in size and is looked forward to each year with as much enthusiasm as children anticipate Halloween. And, in the plus 20 years of its life span, the Annual Pig Roast has only been rained out once!

2002/2003 Board News

The Board is proposing the Sampson Schoolhouse for "Historical Landmark" status. If accepted, the Schoolhouse could receive funds to help maintain it!

Mitch Tanenbaum, Pres. Tamie Martin, Sec. Virginia Temmer, Trea.

At this Thanksgiving Dinner/Annual Board meeting, some new officers will be voted in. The offices coming open are: Vice President and Treasurer, both two year terms.

But, before volunteering yourself or nominating someone else for one of these offices, please take some time to think about a few things.

The person in office needs to want to be in office because he/she wants to help our community and club grow, help maintain buildings and desires to make a positive difference. He/she, as well as spoken words and deeds, are a direct reflection of the Sampson Community Club!

In addition to the duties of the office, this person will also be responsible for getting flyers/newsletters printed and distributed in a timely manner. One delivery takes 6 hours. Plus retrieving/shopping for events' supplies, assist in setting up for events and pinch hitting at the Club's events when no volunteers are available; one event per month, May through November.

So, if you can honestly say, "Yes", to all the above and will joyfully give the Sampson Community Club some of your attention, energy and time, throw your hat in the ring in November!

The Greenhouse Corner

Well, here we again, at the end of the gardening season. Oh, sure, we'll be gathering in a few more of these and a couple of those, but for the most of it, it's the end of the season.

As I promised, I said I'd let you know how my "Inter-planting" of Cold Weather with Summer Harvest vegies turned out. It was a success! In fact, I've got some Broccoli and some Corn still hanging on. The heat of July "did in" the Cold Weather seeds I'd planted, so, I had to replant outside in early August. Mid-August's Full Moon found me in my Greenhouse, seeds in hand, starting more Cold Weather vegies. Beans, Brussels Sprouts, Broccoli, Cabbage, Lettuce, Spinach and Peas. I'll harvest them in late November.

This is the time of the year when I sketch out next year's garden blueprint, while ideas are still fresh on my mind. I'll finalize my plan in February or March. This is also the time when I clean all my outdoor gardening tools and put them away.

I till my garden under in late October, giving it a feeding of dead leaves, lettuce and spinach leaves, coffee grounds and whatever Hay, (mulch), I couldn't rake up. After tilling, I mark my rows, recover with Hay, (to keep the Spring weeds out), and come late March, my garden is ready for the first planting. Then, I'll scootch the Hay aside, carve out the row with my Hoe, give it some water, plant, re-cover and watch for green.

Last issue, if you remember, I wrote, "Rhubarb What?" It really should have read, "Chutney?" Chutney is a thick, yummy sauce, made out of the 1 squash, 2 tomatoes, 1 carrot and the rest of the odds and ends from your garden. Chutney is a delicious accompaniment for meats and poultry.
