The Squeaky Squirrel
The
Squeaky Squirrel
A newsletter about and for our Mountain Community
by Virginia Temmer, President, Sampson Community Club
July 2010
Tribute to Miss Dee and Michael T. Lee
Dee Lee wrote the Squeaky Squirrel without a pause for many years (This Squirrel is late, and it's MY FAULT.) Since she and Mike have their house on the market, they are bowing out of most of their activities with the Sampson Community Club. We have relied on Dee for a variety of duties-including writing the Squeaky Squirrel. Mike and Dee established the flowerbeds around Sampson Club. Mike and Dee initiated the website. They are tenured professors at the Hogwarts School of Wizardry. The list is longer than this, but it's clear: They are stellar members. They haven't sold their house yet, so you may see them around. Make sure you thank them for all they have done, if you see them. I know I'll be picking their brains! Mike and Dee will be sorely missed.
Bikes
Controversial, YES! Sampson Community Club is participating in the Deer Creek Roads Safety Coalition. We counted motor vehicles and bicycles at Phillipsburg on June 5 and June 9. We noted directions everybody went. We also surveyed the bicyclists, and any driver of a motor vehicle that stopped by our table. The count is done, but the survey analysis is incomplete. Check out the numbers on our website, www.sampsonclub.org. Our goal is to make the canyon roads safe for all users, and this data will be used to support any changes that are necessary. Virtually everyone who stopped agreed that problems are caused by less than 5% of the road users.
Changes at the Club
Floor
In March, a member donated half the money to refinish the main level of Sampson School. Mr. Sandless came by and mud oozed from the floor! The results are dramatic. Check it out when you come to the Ice Cream Social on July 11th at 2:00 pm.
Chairs
We replaced the dirty cloth-covered chairs with some sturdy plastic folding chairs that can easily be cleaned. Comfort was a major requirement, too-so take note of them at the Ice Cream Social, too. We still need a rack for them, so let us know if you can either make one or find one somewhere.
Lamb School
The Kuehster Road crew, headed by Andy Hoover, have been cleaning, and fixing up Lamb School. These people have financed virtually all of the work themselves. The windows, which are being historically repaired, cost $250 each. Please, if anyone can donate to this cause, we'd appreciate it. Lamb School is a beautiful property, and we hope to make it usable for more than the Pig Roast!
Garage Sale Possibility
Several residents have approached Sampson Club about holding a Garage Sale. So far, no one has stepped up to coordinate one. If we get a coordinator, we will put a sign up at Phillipsburg, so you have an opportunity to participate!
Garden Moments
This summer, the community garden will be idle at Sampson Community Club, since there was not enough interest in it this season. Maybe next year we can spark interest sooner!
Membership Dues
If you still need to pay your $20.00 yearly dues, please mail them to the "Sampson Community Club mailbox, 16150 Sampson Road, Littleton, CO, 80127". And if you would like to join the Sampson Community Club, please mail your $20.00 membership dues along with your name and telephone number to the Club's mailbox listed above. If you have any questions, please call one of the Board Members listed above. Please support our efforts to promote peace and independent thought in the Deer Creek Canyon neighborhood.
Beautiful Bargain Spot
Need a place to rent for a special occasion? The Sampson Schoolhouse is available. It's looking nice enough for that summer wedding reception, birthday party, retirement party, or barbeque. It's cool, and a nice location that does not include the interruptions of cell service.
Electronic Mail
If you would you like to receive the Squeaky Squirrel electronically, please contact Mitch Tanenbaum at mitch@mtanenbaum.us
