More Memories: Cottonwood Gulch, Part II by Jan Clawson

And now about the house: a picture on page 99 in the book, Mountain Memories, From Coffee Pot Hill to Medlen Town, edited by Betty Moynihan and Helen E. Waters, a history of this mountain area shows "Old Man Mackey," who records show owned the property in 1917, just over the brow of Maxwell House Hill. Perhaps he built the first log cabin or lived in one already built.

Anyway a log cabin was built, one room, another room being added later which is now my kitchen. When the old wallboard was removed the logs were still intact although much chinking was missing. The windows remained in the walls painted an aqua color, three on the east wall and two on the south wall. Not being the rustic type wallboard was used to finish the walls. A piece of the original log wall was left as it was and framed 36" by 70" as a curiosity and to remind us of what once was.

Who built this log home? Who lived here? Wishing for some identity of those who had gone before, we placed a time capsule in the window before covering it with wallboard: the front page of the Rocky Mountain News for that day, a Susan B. Anthony dollar, and our names. Perhaps some one someday may be surprised and please to find it.

At sometime after the first room was built, it appears as evidenced by the exposed logs, another room was needed and added which as I said before is the kitchen. Once again logs were hidden behind cupboards and drywall. Thick 12" doorways between other rooms tell of the original logs. Someone coming from the attic commented, "it looks as if a new room was added as occupants needed one," being able to tell by the structure that showed in the attic.

The living room-dining room, lath and plaster, has a stone fireplace with a stone from every state or so the story was told to me. Two bedrooms, a sunroom and a bathroom, with original iron claw-footed tub, and a utility room complete the upstairs. A walk-in basement with three finished rooms and room for much storage completes the house.

And now for the rest of the story. A building that was known as and is still called the "Party House" stands close to the house. A rock wall 50' by 30' was built "L" shaped. The party house was built in the corner of the wall. Inside, a mason built three brick alcoves for wood or gas burning stones and a fire-place: a building large enough for many people and many parties.

When I walk in, I can still hear the laughter and singing of many parties. Perhaps once or twice a year there are still smores and wieners roasted in the fireplace or family and friends gather around the tables.

For those of you interested in the history of the area where we live, I suggest the Mountain Memories book referred to earlier. Please call Virginia Temmer, (303) 697-7272, for a copy of the book.

     * * * Jan Clawson is our good neighbor, a 40-year local area historian, and a brilliant writer. Jan has kindly agreed to share her knowledge of the area and some of her memories with the Squeaky Squirrel readership. Jan, from all of us history-buffs, thank you!
