Editor's Notes

The Squeaky Squirrel, a quarterly newsletter, is published on the 15th of March, June, September and December.  Deadlines for ads and submissions are the 1st of these same months.

President, Dave Pettus (303) 697-8780 Secretary, Dee Lee (a.k.a. Miss Dee) (303) 697-2558

We had a great time…

…at the Summer Celebration - Book & Tape Swap.  Many books, cassette and VHS tapes, and DVD's were swapped, a variety of salads, breads, and live music were enjoyed, and folks shared good conversation.

…at the Barbecue/Ice Cream Social.  Lively and pleasant music, provided by Don Coenen, and a world of ice cream, whipped cream, and special toppings were truly enjoyed by all.

     …at the Roll-Off.  The 30-yard roll-off ate a lot!

…at the Pig Roast.  The roasted pig was absolutely delicious, the varieties of side dishes were all scrumptious, and the kids had a great time throwing water balloons.  And even though we moved the Pig Roast to the Sampson Schoolhouse because of the rain, we had a huge turnout.

The Greenhouse Corner

Once again and sadly, we are at the end of the gardening season; a great season if you don't count the Heat Wave of July and all the stuff you lost because of it. :-(

Here is a list of outside chores to do before it starts you know whating - S*N*O*W*I*N*G.

#1  Go shopping!  At this time of the year, many stores are clearing out seeds, gardening tools, and gardening supplies.  Put your seeds in the refrigerator or a cool, dark place until you are ready to plant.

#2  Collar your roses to help protect the roots and the base of the bush.  Use the container your roses came in or purchased collars, fill the collar with hay, heavy on the bottom, and fill it to the top.

#3  Tree Wrap your special trees with "Tree Wrap," available at garden nurseries.  Wrap the trunk up to the first branch to help protect the tree against the wind and the cold.

#4  Plant your Spring bulbs three times the depth of the height of the bulb or if the bulb is 1" long, the hole should be 3" deep.  Add Bone Meal to the hole before you plant.  Dust the bulbs with Baby Powder before planting because the critters dislike the taste, and that insures that they won't dig up your bulbs.

#5   Clean your gardening tools in a bucket of sand with one cup of cooking oil added.  This mixture will help remove the dirt and mud.  It will also give your tools a covering of oil that helps keep the rust away.

From the Board

Recently the Board has been contacted by the State to support our charitable status, which makes our properties tax-free.  The State requested documents that have been provided.

Also, we received a denial letter from the Post Office regarding our ability to use non-profit postage rates. Their basis was that the activities benefited the members only.  We are appealing this decision.

Our events have never been for members only, and we try to hold events that are of interest to the local public.  We have always been open to suggestions from members and non-members.

We will keep you informed as to our progress in relationship to these reviews.
